2022 - Word Brain

A few of you have asked about my writing, since I have not posted any writing updates in quite a while. I even had to ask myself, “Am I still writing?”. I will be honest, it has been a struggle recently to feel creative. Ongoing pandemic, started a new job, move daughter to her first house, daughter in graduate school, helping future son-in-law, learning to be empty nesters, health challenges for Angie and me, increased caregiving, all leading to a general malaise in my life. My hobbies and my writing took the brunt of it as I focused on surviving it all.

You fail only if you stop writing.

Ray Bradbury

I can say, I did not completely fail. I have still be reading influential books, writing up ideas as they come to mind, and in moments of clarity having some time to ponder my writing. But, have I really been doing any serious writing?…not really. Not for quite a few months.

This is how you do it; you sit down at the keyboard and you put one word after another until it’s done. It’s that easy, and that hard.

Neil Gaiman

It is hard. I have struggled. My mind has been full of so much that is not creative. Only recently have I returned to some of my more creative hobbies like roleplaying and painting. Those times have stretched my creative muscles again and are returning my interest in writing even more. I am once again sitting before the keyboard to write. It feels good to be doing so again.

Here is some encouragement from one of my favorite authors to all my fellow writers who also are struggling with writer’s block or a malaise from life right now…

Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.

Louis L’Amour
