RPGaDAY 2023 Banner

Sorry for the long hiatus. Life presented some significant challenges, so the blog was set aside. I feel I am in a good place again and can return to my blogging and writing. Thanks for your patience.

Welcome to the end of #RPGaDAY2023. Unlike previous years, I decided to return to the daily posts on social media for each day in August. This helped get me back into some writing again and share a hobby I am so passionate about. Just relax and enjoy random musings about my TTRPG hobby.

RPGaDAY2023

#RPGaDAY2023 1) FIRST RPG played (this year) – That would be our D&D 5e Spelljammer campaign where I am playing Captain Remington Hammerlock, Giff Eldritch Knight. https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/361551/spelljammer-adventures-space

#RPGaDAY2023 2) First RPG GAMEMASTER – I loved superhero comic books as a kid. So when a friend in Junior High showed me Villains & Vigilantes, a “roleplaying?” game where you create your own superheroes, I was hooked and I make my first character. https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/43363/villains-vigilantes-boxed-set

#RPGaDAY2023 3) First RPG BOUGHT (this year) – I started in the hobby with a superhero ttrpg & enjoy checking out new ones. I purchased S5E (Superheroic Roleplaying for 5e) to see if my D&D 5e players might enjoy superhero gaming. Hope to play it soon. https://peginc.com/product-tag/s5e/

#RPGaDAY2023 4) Most RECENT game bought – I have an itch to step away from fantasy gaming for my next ttrpg to run so I picked up Mongoose Traveller Core Rulebook Update 2022 and the Humble Bundle for Traveller.

#RPGaDAY2023 5) OLDEST game you’ve played – I have played D&D Basic (1e) and classic Traveller, both published in 1977. Currently, I am playing 5e D&D and prepping to run the Traveller 2022 update, so I have come full circle in those rpgs from the early versions to the newest.

#RPGaDAY2023 6) Favourite game you NEVER get to play – I love the pulp genre, but no one else in my gaming groups has that interest. So, many pulp ttrpgs have not made it to the table with my most recent passion being Adventure! Tales of the Aeon Society.
https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/45566/adventure-tales-aeon-society

#RPGaDAY2023 7) SMARTEST RPG you’ve played – King Arthur Pendragon. Every play feels like a lesson in history and mythology as we delve into the legends of our characters’ families, generation after generation. I am very curious about the newest edition.

#RPGaDAY2023 8) Favourite CHARACTER – That would be Oz, my half-ogre fighter. Famous for his ever clean shiny purple pants and chicken-on-a-stick. I’ve played him in multiple AD&D campaigns. He is now a major NPC in my current 5e D&D campaign. I would play him again in a moment.

#RPGaDAY2023 9) Favourite DICE – How can you make me pick just one set? That is not a fair question. Rather than struggling to pick just one set, how about you enjoy some of my dice sets and storage solutions. They all have a special place in my heart.

#RPGaDAY2023 10) Favourite tie-in FICTION – Record of Lodoss War, originally a serialized D&D campaign in a magazine that became an anime series. This anime has had a huge impact on my fantasy campaigns and the characters I have played over the years. Feels like time for a rewatch again. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_of_Lodoss_War

#RPGaDAY2023 11) WEIRDEST game you’ve played – The weirdest and most fun ttrpg I have played would be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness using the sourcebooks After the Bomb, Road Hogs, and Mutants Down Under.
https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/43367/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-other-strangeness

#RPGaDAY2023 12) Old game you STILL play – Every few years, I get the nostalgic urge to pull out my AD&D 1e books for a one-shot or mini-campaign. So many decades of memories playing that game, fun to step back into those old rules and well-worn books.

#RPGaDAY2023 13) Most memorable character DEMISE – My first ever D&D character, a cleric, was swallowed by giant frog on his first adventure. He died because he didn’t have an edged weapon to cut himself out. I realized then that ttrpgs required tactics alongside dice rolling.

#RPGaDAY2023 14) Favourite CONVENTION purchase – At Gen Con, I wandered into the @ForgedFoam booth. Dwarves are my favorite fantasy race, The Hobbit started that love, so I picked up a battle axe for my game room. I’ve since purchased other weapons.

#RPGaDAY2023 15) Favourite Con MODULE / ONE-SHOT – My friend, @Mark_D_C, runs one-shots called Toon Dungeon. Classic D&D modules with players as cartoon characters using the Toon ttrpg. Cartoon physics and antics meet deadly dungeon crawls. Chaotic fun!

#RPGaDAY2023 16) Game you WISH you owned – I have always thought Cadillacs and Dinosaurs looked like some over-the-top, funny, action and adventure. Saw it in a game store when I was younger and didn’t pick it up as my players then were not interested.
https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/47251/cadillacs-and-dinosaurs

#RPGaDAY2023 17) FUNNIEST game you’ve played – I don’t run horror or super serious campaigns. My gaming groups like to have fun and we celebrate hilarious moments in our adventures. I often give out inspiration/bennies/fate points when my players get me really laughing.

#RPGaDAY2023 18) Favourite game SYSTEM – That would be Feng Shui. Simple to teach, fast to play, and so flexible for storytelling. I use it for the majority of my one-shot gaming, making up my own worlds and home brew around that basic system.
https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/177145/feng-shui-2

#RPGaDAY2023 19) Favourite PUBLISHED adventure – Hard to choose between L1 The Secret of Bone Hill or T1 The Village of Hommlet. Both are sandbox modules for D&D that I have used to start and center so many campaigns around.

#RPGaDAY2023 20) Will still play in TWENTY years time – Will still play in TWENTY years time – No idea where the hobby will go but I am sure I will still be in a gaming group. Might be a ttrpg I have already played or a new one. I’ve been gaming for almost 40 year now, what is another 20?

#RPGaDAY2023 21) Favourite LICENSED RPG – I’ve played a lot of MERP, WEG Star Wars, Legend of the Five Rings, DC Adventures, and Dresden Files, but my favorite and most played would be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness.
https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/43367/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-other-strangeness

#RPGaDAY2023 22) Best SECONDHAND RPG purchase – I purchased my first AD&D 1e books from a friend in my gaming group who purchased the newest orange-spine books. That set of used books led me to GM my first gaming group and my passion for storytelling and GMing over the decades.
https://rpggeek.com/rpg/191/advanced-dungeons-dragons-1st-edition

#RPGaDAY2023 23) COOLEST looking RPG product / book – The Shadowrun Sixth World limited edition has a faux-kevlar cover which makes the book feel integral to the world of Shadowrun. You have to admit having a cyberpunk themed rpg with a faux bulletproof cover is pretty cool.
https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/280687/shadowrun-sixth-world-core-rulebook

#RPGaDAY2023 24) COMPLEX / SIMPLE RPG you play – I used to love really crunchy rpgs but I tend toward much simpler mechanics these days so I can focus on storytelling. Most complex I am currently playing is Pathfinder 2e. Simplest would be Kids on Brooms.

https://rpggeek.com/rpgitem/315705/kids-brooms

#RPGaDAY2023 25) UNPLAYED RPG you own – So many on my shelves. Many I purchased because they interest me but just haven’t found the right time to get to the table including the likes of Good Society: A Jane Austen RPG, G.I.JOE RPG, Adventures in Middle-earth, and S5E.

#RPGaDAY2023 26) Favourite CHARACTER SHEET – A blank piece of paper. I love starting with the blank slate and building up my character. By the time I am done, the paper is covered with dice rolls, character choices, notes, musings, some scribbled art, and early ideas for a history.

#RPGaDAY2023 27) Game you’d like a new EDITION of… – Shadowrun. I really like the fantasy cyberpunk world but have yet to find an edition that is fun to play as a campaign. My gaming groups have tried numerous times and the system just gets in the way of the fun every time.
https://rpggeek.com/rpgfamily/311/shadowrun

#RPGaDAY2023 28) SCARIEST game you’ve played – I don’t tend to play horror games, so the scariest I have played would be Call of Cthulhu and it was more focused on the investigation side rather than the cosmic horror side.
https://rpggeek.com/rpgfamily/814/call-cthulhu

#RPGaDAY2023 29) Most memorable ENCOUNTER – My half-ogre fighter, Oz, had a life changing event. A guy was selling chicken-on-a-stick. Food “magically” appeared when he reached his hand into the box on wheels. Oz purchased the “magic” box and walked around town with it all day.

#RPGaDAY2023 30) OBSCURE RPG you’ve played – Over the decades, I have played so many rpgs that are no longer in print or rarely ever talked about. Some favorites over the years were Street Fighter: The Storytelling Game, Ironclaw, Marauder 2107, and Sovereign Stone. #RPGaDAY2023 31) FAVOURITE RPG of all time – The one I am playing at the moment with my friends. I play and run rpgs to build shared stories and experiences with my friends. Whatever we are enjoying is my favorite at the time.
