RPGaDAY 2022 Cover

As in previous years, I decided to once again post my #RPGaDAY2022 responses all at once here on the blog rather than each day in August. If I try to do it daily, I will forget, mix up the days, or get too busy to post. So, enjoy another year of stream of conscious responses through this amazing list of random prompts. Sorry if the randomness throws you off. Just relax and enjoy random musings about my TTRPG hobby.

RPGaDAY 2022 List of categories. Duplicated in text below.

#RPGaDAY2022 Prompts:

1 – Who would you like to introduce to RPGs?

Honestly, my parents. My daughters are now avid roleplayers, many of my in-laws, nephews, and nieces play. My wife has dabbled in the hobby. My mom has never quite understood my passion for the hobby nor her granddaughters interest. I would be nervous as all get out, but I would enjoy introducing my parents someday to the hobby, at least so they could experience it once.

2 – What is a great introductory RPG?

So many great options in the RPG hobby now that can fit the interests and experiences of new players. For me, I have recently been using Pugmire, D&D 5e, or Feng Shui 2. Feng Shui 2 works so well as it has a VERY simple two D6 system and can easily be homebrewed to work in any setting.

3 – When were you first introduced to RPGs?

A friend of mine was sitting on the school bus in the seat in front of me in middle school, looking at a book with superhero pictures but lots of text. He seemed to be taking notes. I asked what he was up to and he let me know it was this new game he had found called Villains and Vigilantes that let’s you create and play your own superheroes. He invited me over to his house to try the game and I was hooked after one session. I asked my mom to drive me over to a game shop my friend recommend called The Wizard’s Keep and purchased my first ever RPG box set which I still have on my shelf today.

4 – Where would you host a first game?

Most often I have hosted first games for people either in a classroom as part of the gaming classes I have taught or online via Discord/Roll20/Google Meet. I am meeting the new players where they are and most comfortable. My preference is to host games in my home where we can relax, have some amazing snacks, and I have access to my entire gaming library.

5 – Why will they like this game?

People will like RPGs if they come to them with an open mind, feel respected by everyone playing, enjoy the creative aspects, and have a fun experience.

6 – How would you get more people playing RPGs?

I love that streaming has helped popularize rpgs and now more libraries and schools have rpgs available, so it is not just gaming stores. By being in libraries and schools, the hobby becomes more normal and accepted. Personally, I get more people playing by being willing to run RPGs for new players. I try to do it a few times a year.

7 – System Sunday: Describe a cool part of a system that you love.

I love any system that offers the players some mechanical ability to alter the game world. Mechanics like Hero Points (James Bond RPG), Fate Points (Fate), Luck (Feng Shui 2), Inspiration (Adventure!), etc. These provide the player some creative autonomy and challenge the storyteller to stay engage creatively with the players.

8 – Who introduced you to RPGs?

A friend from school. Discussed above in point 3.

9 – What is the 2nd RPG you bought?

AD&D first edition. After playing Villains and Vigilantes a while, I was asked by other friends of mine to join their AD&D group. It took a lot of discussion and trust from my mom to let me play AD&D as the Satanic Panic of the time really had impacted the reputation of that game. Another mom of a player in that group spoke with my mom to allow me to play it. Once I started playing it, I bought old copies of some of the books from one of the players who had purchased newer copies.

10 – When did/will you start Gamemastering?

I started gamemastering within my first months of gaming as my friend and I swapped back and forth who ran Villains and Vigilantes. After a couple years of playing in an AD&D group, I formed my own gaming group to play other games that interested me like TMNT and Other Strangeness and Champions.

11 – If you could live in a game setting, where would it be?

My favorite game setting and literary setting is Middle-Earth.

12 – Why did you start RPGing?

I loved superheroes and reading comics. Villains and Vigilantes allowed me to create my own superheroes and write my own comic book stories.

13 – How would you change the way you started RPGing?

I would be more open with my mom and family about my roleplaying. I kept it really to myself which I think is a reason much of my side of the family still doesn’t understand my passion for the hobby. My wife’s side of the family are much more open about their hobbies and openly discussing their roleplaying games together.

14 – Suggestion Sunday: Roll 1d8+1, and tag that many friends and suggest a new RPG to try.

Not going to roll or tag. If you are reading this and have never played an RPG but are interested, let me know and I would love to introduce you to the hobby. There are some amazing new RPGs that could interest new players that have great themes and simpler mechanics for new players.

15 – Who would you like to Gamemaster for you?

I have really enjoyed playing in one-shots with my daughters and both run games for other people. Someday, I would like to play in a long term campaign run by either of my daughters. Be fun to see the GM torch pass to one of them.

16 – What would be your perfect game?

Any game night where I am sitting around a table with my friends and family, playing a game, laughing, and enjoying some great snacks is a perfect game night.

17 – Past, Present, or Future? When is your favourite game set?

My favorite is a past future. I love post-apocalyptic like the shows Mad Max Road Warrior, Thundarr the Barbarian, Ballad of the Juggers, etc. and games like TMNT After the Bomb/Road Hogs, Gamma World, Mutant Year Zero, Car Wars, Autoduel, etc. It is past future because it was the future as seem from the 70s to 90s so the tech is still very low tech compared to today. Sadly, I don’t get to play that much any more because my current gaming group are not of that era nor as interested in that setting.

18 – Where is you favourite place to play?

My favorite place to play is at home. Like I said in 16, sitting around a table, playing a game, eating, and laughing is a perfect day for me.

19 – Why has your favourite game stayed with you?

My most played and favorite game has been the many editions of D&D because I have enjoyed it for over thirty years across many gaming groups. It is a game I can keep coming back to and enjoy with old and new friends.

20 – How long do your games last?

4 to 6 hours, closer to 4 hours these days as all my players are getting older, have busy lives, and need to get to bed.

21 – Setting Sunday: Share an intriguing detail from a game setting you enjoy.

22 – Who is your current character?

I am currently only playing in one campaign that just started: Shamil a Versatile Human (Suli) Priest of Bigh (Banished Brighite) in the Outlaws of Alkenstar PF2 campaign.

23 – What situation are they currently in?

We just started so the issue is I am banished from the church for my beliefs and an outlaw. Now have to prove myself worthy again.

24 – When did you start playing this character?

This month.

25 – Where has the character been?

Alkenstar.

26 – Why does your character do what they do?

Shamil seeks the truth of creation around him.

27 – How has the character changed?

He hasn’t yet as we are just getting started. Sorry, boring story so far.

28 – Style Sunday: Roll 1d8+1, tag that many friends with your favourite RPG cover art.

No tagging of friends but this book cover inspired me when I first saw it. It had so much going on in regards to fantasy gaming at the time. Plus, I really loved dwarves and it was great to see one on the cover.
